Within virtualization, a virtual machine may be configured to have a virtualized serial port. There are a number of uses for the serial port within a virtual machine. The serial port can be mapped to the host server’s serial port, and then make use of the host’s physically attached device(s). A virtual machine could therefore use a modem that is attached to its host. Additionally, a virtual serial port can be redirected to send its output to a file on the host server. This is useful when trying to capture the data that an application running in a virtual machine may send to the serial port.

Some of the virtual hardware is emulated or simulated by the virtualization layer and some of it actually maps to real hardware, exposed through the VMM in a very controlled manner. The host server is probably the most familiar component. The host server is the physical, bare metal, x86 server computer on which the virtualization layer resides. Throughout the book, it may be referred to as the host server, the physical server, the physical host server, or simply as the host. If the host server has an operating system installed, the operating system is referred to as the host operating system or host OS.

In a database server application, a single instance of the database server executes within the operating system. The primary service of the database server is to provide database access. Database servers can typically provide multiple databases per server instance. Each database can be configured to appear to a consumer to be the only database on the server, when in reality there may be 20 databases being concurrently accessed by 500 users. Most modern Web server applications allow multiple “virtual” Web sites to be created and hosted simultaneously from a single instance of the application.
