Even in this narrowly identified area of academ ic discourse, it is n o t always safe to assume overlaps. Take, for exam ple, the genres of textbook and research article. As instances of a broad category o f academ ic discourse, they do seem to display significant overlap in terms o f what is popularly known as field of discourse, especially patterns of specialist lexis and certain rhetorical functions; however, the two genres certainly have their own ‘generic integrity’ (Bhatia, 1993), which is often reflected in some o f the following features.
