Greece and Rome For students of literature, the enduring image of the early Greek garden is contained in the final pages of Homer’s 10 OUP CORRECTED PROOF – FINAL, 31/8/2016, SPi The Ancient and Medieval Garden Odyssey, in which King Laertes is depicted hoeing his vineyard, and Odysseus proves his identity by recalling lessons in horticulture that his father had given to him as a child. This was a palace garden, but its primary purpose was the production of food, and so it accommodated a vineyard, an orchard and a vegetable patch.
This garden’s large octagonal pool was clearly designed to reflect the Taj.
